(The Beautiful Esopus River)
The Catskill Mountains, located in New York State, has magnificent scenery. The Esopus River is located in the Catskill mountain region of southeast New York State. It has a steep gradient with many large boulders and plunge pools. The entire 26-mile course of the river flows “clockwise” in a sweeping arc from the headwaters at Winnisook Lake on Slide Mountain to the Ashokan Reservoir. It’s tributary network drains some of the most rugged terrain in the Catskill Mountains. There are 21 peaks greater than 3000 feet above sea level (ft asl) that are drained by this network. Among them is Slide Mountain, the highest peak in the Catskills at 4,120 ft.
The Esopus River streams are steep forces that cause erosion as water and sediment make the quick descent from mountain top to the base of the watershed at the reservoir. Its watershed covers a 192 square mile area with a base elevation of 633 ft and includes at least 330 miles of stream.
In the summertime at Esopus Creek, the temperature highs are normally in the 70's while overnight lows are normally in the 50's. Throughout the wintertime the temperature highs are normally in the 20's and the overnight lows for the Esopus Creek are around 0.
The Esopus River is one of the best locations for trout fishing in New York State. It is full of wild trout, mostly Rainbows, but also carries some Brown Trout. Many fisherman find success easy on this river because of its large population of wild Rainbow Trout. Many of these fish are on the small size and it is not unusual to catch 20 fish with the biggest being only 8 inches. There are a few tricks to catching larger fish on the Esopus, which include putting away your dry flies and using live bait.
The Big Indian to Boiceville stretch of Esopus creek in Ulster County is 17 miles long and is according to American Whitewater has a class II-III section of whitewater. A bit of exercise, fun, and just being out on the river will give you a memorable experience. Whether you enjoy whitewater rafting or kayaking, there are plenty of available spots on the river.
The Esopus River has many memories for me traveling past it as a child. I used to visit my grandparents frequently and we would pass by it sometimes on the way there. Their house was up past Woodstock, near the Esopus River and the trip there was fantastic. Although they have both passed away, it means a lot to think of the great River I would ride past to see them. It really connects me to the River and has given me memories of such a great gift from God.
The Esopus River is filled with whitewater and is quite the bumpy ride for travelers that are rafting and kayaking, but they are kept safe because of the provided life preservers. Even those who were frightened at first, have all agreed that the trip was worthwhile just for the memory left with them. In the Christian life, we take a road that it is not easy to traverse, but we are able to persevere through it because we also have a life preserver, which is God. Even though many people become discouraged and frightened during their trials they know that it will be worthwhile in the end when God has rewarded us for our faithfulness
